ISBN: 0198509480
Book author: David Isenberg, Peter Maddison, Patricia Woo, David Glass, Ferdinand Breedveld
Amazon Rating:

Book Description:
The new edition of this highly successful textbook is now available in one carefully integrated volume. A strong clinical emphasis is present throughout from the first section of commonly presenting problems through to the section addressing problems shared with a range of other clinical sub-specialties. The therapy of rheumatic diseases has undergone radical change in the last years with new biological therapies and the new evidence for these therapies is covered extensively. For this edition, all chapters are updated, many are completely new and a considerable number radcally revised. Certain chapters are highly innovative in their approach eg. Adolescence in transition and there is an almost completely new 5 chapter section on outcomes and issues in delivering rheumatological care. In order to tackle the question of how these clinical problems arise a well-written beautifully illustrated account is given of fundamental processes of inflammation. This clearly shows that musculoskeletal diseases in the main arise as a combination of genetic, hormonal, environmental and other factors which conspire against the individual. The fourth section deals with the important topic of investigations. Patients with rheumatological disease often suffer a wide variety of complications and this section provides a detailed review of means of assessment. The book also provides a thorough and comprehensive review of the many forms of arthritis and their allied complications, illustrated by many colour photographs. Numerous clinical algorithms are provided throughout to facilitate discussions about management in each of the major forms of arthritis.

Mechanisms and Models in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Mechanisms and Models in Rheumatoid Arthritis
By B. Henderson, J. G. Edwards, E. R. Pettipher

Publication Date: 1995-04-12
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0123404401

Binding: Hardcover

Rheumatoid arthritis is a bewilderingly complex disease involving the interactions of many, and varied, cell populations and multiple families of low and high molecular mass mediators. We are only slowly beginning to understand the mechanisms that produce the local and systematic pathology clinically recognized as rheumatoid arthritis. Increasingly, use is being made of experimental models of this disease in an effort to test hypotheses about putative pathological mechanisms and to investigate the effect of novel therapeutic agents. A major section of this book covers these experimental models in great detail from their development through to reviews of the most recent information on each model.
Mechanisms and Models in Rheumatoid Arthritis brings together a group of eminent researchers from the fields of clinical rheumatology, pathology, experimental pathology, immunology, connective tissue biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology and developmental biology to describe the current views of the cellular and humoral mechanisms that drive the pathology of rheumatoid arthritis and experimental models of rheumatoid arthritis.
Key Features:
* The book is divided into five sections:
* The clinical spectrum, aetiopathogenesis, the role of microbial superantigens in pathology and the present and future therapies for rheumatoid arthritis
* The pathology of rheumatoid arthritis, the development and role of synovial pannus and the use of immunohistochemistry in defining synovial pathology
* Cell populations involved in synovitis with chapters on synovial cells, chondrocytes, bone cells, leukocytes and leukocyte trafficking
* Mediators, with coverage of: cytokines and cytokine inhibitors, growth factors, free radicals and inflammatory lipid mediators, neuropeptides and proteases
* Current studies on experimental models of rheumatoid arthritis

Book Description:

The value of ultrasound contrast agents (USCA) in everyday clinical practice depends on the pharmacokinetics, the signal processing, and the contrast-specific imaging modalities. Second-generation USCA, are blood pool agents that do not leak into the organ tissue to be examined but remain in the intravascular compartment increasing the Doppler signal amplitude during their dynamic vascular phase. Taking advantage of the stability of their microbubbles, they can withstand the acoustic pressure of insonation much better than first-generation contrast media, which results in an increased half-life of the agent and, consequently, in a prolonged diagnostic window. Concomitant with the improvement of contrast agents, different contrast-specific imaging modalities have been developed which, used in combination with USCA and a low mechanical index, allow continuous real-time grey-scale imaging. These recent technical improvements have opened new possibilities in the use of USCA in a variety of indications. Written by internationally renowned experts, the contributions gathered in this book give an overview of current and possible future new applications of USCA in routine and clinical practice.

This book demonstrates the applications of synchrotron radiation in certain aspects of cell microbiology, specifically non-destructive elemental analyses, chemical-state analyses and imaging (distribution) of the elements within a cell. The basics for understanding and applications of synchrotron radiation are also described to make the contents easier to be understood for a wide group of researchers in medical and biological sciences who might not be familiar with the physics of synchrotron radiation. The two main techniques that are discussed in this book are the x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and the x-ray fine structure analysis (XAFS). Application of these techniques in investigations of several important scientific fields, such as neurodegeneration and other diseases related to cell malfunctioning, are demonstrated in this book.

This is one of the only textbooks of childhood arthritis available in the world and employs a unique approach to the recognition and treatment of these complex and chronic conditions. The book is divided into three sections emphasizing the logical sequence of events that occur after the child who might have Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) first presents to the doctor with a musculoskeletal complaint. The reader is first taught the extensive differential diagnosis of arthritis using simple but extensive algorithms and detailed discussions of each condition; more than 200 conditions are discussed. This is followed by a discussion of all types of JIA, using a revised classification system created by the International League of Associations for Rheumatology. The introduction of this new classification system has created a need for a comprehensive guide to clarify and focus attention on childhood arthritis. Lastly, the book presents an extensive discussion of treatment of childhood arthritis using a novel approach. It recognizes that childhood arthritis is treated differently depending on the stage of the illness, and must cover the entire spectrum of chronic illness from early, through established and finally to resistant forms of childhood arthritis. Through this textbook, the reader travels the same journey as the physician who first rules out all conditions that are not chronic childhood arthritis, and then decides which type of chronic arthritis the patient has, and lastly, implements an individualised treatment plan.
