Book Description:

Purinergic receptors are proteins that bind ATP as their extracellular ligand. Once thought only as an intracellular molecule that provides energy, ATP is also now considered an essential autocrine/paracrine agonist that acts extracellularly within tissues and tissue microenvironments. Receptors for ATP and its metabolites, so-called "purinergic receptors," are essential membrane receptors that transduce the extracellular signal carried by ATP. Many cell types or tissues express multiple types of these receptors, often on the same cell. This volume will cover the history and overall impact of extracellular ATP signaling, methods to detect ATP release and signaling, the molecular and cell biology of purinergic receptors, the pharmacology of purinergic receptors, the ion channel biophysics and biochemistry of P2X purinergic receptor channels, and the physiologyand pathophysiology of purinergic receptors.

Book Description:

This cutting-edge review of the orexin/hypocretin system sets the stage for advanced research on the pathological mechanisms underlying the loss of orexin/hypocretin neurons in humans, regulation of sleep and wakefulness by the orexin/hypocretin system, and the role of the orexin/hypocretin system in many other physiological processes, including feeding, autonomic regulation, and neuroendocrine regulation. Topics of interest include assessment of functions and the physiology of orexin/hypocretin, its pathophysiology in human narcolepsy-cataplexy, and possible treatments and pharmacology. The authors also introduce several experimental methods for orexin/hypocretin research, and, using multidisciplinary approaches, explain their uses and limitations.

This book is for the student of medical physiology. The book contains clinical problems for preclinical students; just following the preclinical test the clinical students face real life problems at the clinical courses. The book is aimed at easing the transfer to the clinic and act as a refresher for medical doctors.
Medical physiology and pathophysiology integrates basic topics and the patho-physiological mechanisms governing human life.
I wish to thank the illustrator and designer of the book, Kirsten McCord, who has drawn all illustrations and acted as the prime technical editor.
We acknowledge the kind assistance of: Peter Bie, Jesper Brahm, Per Bredmose, Poul Dyhre Poulsen, Lars Findsen, Ole Frederiksen, Rolf Gideon, Albert Gjedde, Finn Gustavsson, Niels Henrik Holstein-Ratlou, Jørn Hounsgaard, Jens Ingeman Jensen, Finn Michael Karlsen, Paul P. Leyssac, Margrethe Lynggaard, Joop Madsen, Miroslaw Pokorski, Ole Siggaard-Andersen, Jørgen Skydsgaard, Marek Treiman, Thomas Zeuthen, Jørgen Warberg and others. I apologize to the colleagues and students who have contributed without being mentioned here.
To the student
The student is recommended to read this book in the following way. The first time reader of a Chapter is advised to read first of all Highlights The next step is to read only Study Objectives, Definitions and the running text Essentials - Definitions and Highlights are taken from the running text and represent repeated core material. Typically, throughout the book, you will find links to illustrations (Fig.) and equations (Eq.).
After reading the book in this way, it is advisable to deal with the sections Pathophysiology, Equations, and Self-Assessment just before the final examination. Some of the Case Histories in a Chapter present numeric problems.

Pathophysiology of Disease

Pathophysiology of Disease (Paperback)
by Stephen J. McPhee, Vishwanath R. Lingappa, William F. Ganong

Review
Doody's : "The book does an excellent job of integrating basic science concepts with clinical medicine. Each of the organ system chapters reviews the normal anatomy, physiology and histology, then follows with the pathophysiology, clinical findings, and pathology of the more commonly encountered disorders. Additionally there are chapters on genetic diseases, immune diseases and neoplasia which similarly link basic science principles with clinical disease entities. Each chapter contains periodic "checkpoint" questions which guide the reader to the most important concepts. Each chapter also ends with several case studies with questions and discussions, similar to those encountered on board examinations."

Book Description

*This concise review of pathophysiology presents each disease as disordered physiology
*Organized by organ system, each chapter discusses normal structure and function, pathology, and disordered physiology, common clinical presentations and mechanisms underlying symptoms and signs

The Behavioural Ecology Of Parasites

Book Description
Parasites have evolved numerous complex and fascinating ways of interacting with their hosts. The subject attracts the interest of numerous biologists from the perspective of ecology and behavioral biology, as well as from those concerned with more applied aspects of parasitology. However, there has been no recent book to synthesize this field. This book fills this gap in the literature and has been written by leading authorities from the USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Main topics covered include: Foraging for hosts; host acceptance and infection; interactions among parasites with the host; parasite-host interactions.

Book Info
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Univ., Blacksburg. Text addresses the behavioral adaptations of parasites and includes invertebrate parasites. Emphasizes the fundamental principles of parasitism and discusses the diversity and sophistication of parasite behavioral adaptations. Extensively referenced and illustrated.
